gratitude: what it is and why you should be doing it

There are two types of people in this world; those who are thankful and appreciate everything they have, and those who complain about everything they don’t have.

Which one are you?

Do you view the glass as half full or half empty?

I totally get that sometimes bad things happen, and it’s normal to sometimes be sad and upset, but this is more about how you generally approach life. Is it with a negative or a positive attitude?

Do you let every little thing get you down or take things in your stride, knowing that nothing stays the same and this too shall pass.

What is gratitude?

Put simply gratitude is stopping to acknowledge the things you are thankful for.

It’s being in the present moment.

Noticing the good things in your life, no matter how small.

Why should I be practicing gratitude?

There are a whole bunch of reasons as to why we should make gratitude a daily practice. According to research being thankful can lead to improved immune systems, feelings of connectedness and even higher team morale.

Me personally I like that it simply makes me happier. It makes me notice things in my my life that I normally wouldn’t stop to notice.

It makes me realise that overall my life is pretty bloody good.

My gratitude list:

1. My fur child Bella.

What I love most about dogs is their unconditional love and Bella has plenty of that. I love that she is SUPER excited to see me no matter how long I have been gone for. I know sweetie 10min is a really long time!!! I love that she loves the beach as much as I do. I love that she get’s me outside more. I love that she kept me company when I had chronic fatigue, she somehow knew that I wasn’t feeling great and would happily lie next to me on the couch, even though she hadn’t had a walk in days. She loves carrots and will demand one every night before dinner.

2. The beach

The beach is without a doubt my favorite place to be, it is the place that feeds my soul. It’s the place I go to when I want to chill out, relax and just be. I always feel better after being at the beach, there is something magical about the waves crashing, the salty air and the sand beneath your toes. Having recently moved back to the beach I know now that I will never leave. I am grateful to be able to call the beach my home.

3. Pilates

Right now this is my favourite way to exercise, apart from walks on the beach with Bella of course!! I love the way it makes me feel. I love that after a session I feel strong, fit and healthy but not absolutely exhausted, for anyone reading this that has had chronic fatigue, you will understand how important that feeling is. I love that it works muscles I never knew I had. For me Pilates is one of those things I keep coming back to and every time I do I wonder why I ever stopped.
